When I first arrived at Bandwidth.com, I found myself sitting in a lobby waiting for a job interview surrounded by pictures of people playing sports, skiing, and eating barbecue. While I was waiting, a young, well dressed individual walked up to me, looked me square in the eyes, gave me a firm hand shake, and introduced himself as Joe Campbell. After realizing that he was the Vice President of Operations for the fastest growing private telecom company in America, I knew I had to work here – I wanted to see how he got to be where he was.
Once I started at Bandwidth.com, I could see that everyone looked up to Joe. When he spoke, you’d listen - and not just because he’s a VP - but because of what you could learn. I was raised to not leave your work until your boss leaves, but well, let’s just say that I had to compromise on this rule because Joe’s crazy work hours would have kept me from getting any sleep! I’d leave at 9pm and see him in his office, still looking through trouble tickets, on the phone with customers, or showing an engineer how to solve an issue.
In my opinion, it’s not only his dedication to personal excellence at Bandwidth.com that makes Joe Campbell unique, but also his focus on the success of Bandwidth.com and its employees. He does whatever it takes to get the job done. For example, when he first started back in 2002, Bandwidth.com didn’t sell routers. One day a customer needed a router, so Joe used his own money, bought a router, configured it and shipped it to the customer. Today, Joe isn’t configuring routers - although I’m sure he would if he had to.
Joe has developed himself through hard work, dedication, and his desire to learn - and by helping his team be successful. When I asked Joe what memory at Bandwidth.com stands out, he said: “Seeing Kristen Oliver’s face when she received the first ever “Bandi of the Year” award. She had such a big smile on her face and tears in her eyes. Everyone knew she was the right choice and she was just so surprised. It was a great moment.”
Of the folks I admire and look up to as mentors at Bandwidth.com, Joe Campbell near tops the list. I hope that you get a chance to meet him.
