Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line
An internet connection that transmits an asymmetric digital signal to a DSLAM found at a CO. ADSL technology enables data transmission over existing copper wiring at data rates several hundred times faster than analog modems, providing for simultaneous delivery of voice, video, and data.
ADSL is called "asymmetric" because most of its two-way bandwidth is devoted to the downstream direction that sends data to the user. Only a small portion of bandwidth is available for upstreaming. ADSL can share a POTS line.
