First and foremost, not all VoIP is hosted. Hosted VoIP will not allow end users to utilize an existing phone sytem. Hosted IP allows SMBs (Small & Medium Businesses) to gain PBX-like features without having to invest in a costly PBX phone system that will then require them to store it in-house, maintain it on a regular basis, pay for updates, pay for software upgrades, whereas the hosted is out there in a cloud, so there is no equipment neccessary.
