Plain Old Telephone Service
A popular term to define a simple analog line with 64k of throughput. This line is typically used for a single voice conversation such as is found in residential applications. It is also widely used in a business setting for a fax or modem line, or for small offices with 5 or less lines on a simple key or small PBX system. POTs has earned that name referring to a simplistic technology in the face of more complex services such as ISDN or PRI which are circuits with multiple lines bound together and established with protocols to operate higher end PBX systems. POTS can be delivered via standard copper networks that have been built out and are maintained by a Local Exchange Carrier. POTS can also be services over fiber connectivity.
