The first step for avoiding crippling latency in your VoIP network is acquiring a network connection that is latency efficient. Obviously it is noted that a connection from a tier-one provider is superior to that of a lower end carrier because of backbone size and architecture. Ensuring you have enough bandwidth in your network to support the traffic your VoIP application will create is a next important point. Avoid CPE that doesn’t support VoIP. Important metrics of VoIP compatible CPE are QoS, prioritization, and packet queuing. Lastly, make sure your carrier provides an SLA that guarantees latency, has means to measure and monitor latency, and gives contractual means to cancel should they not measure up.
